What we ordered:

Suahe, Crispy Squid, Halaan, Steamed Lapu-Lapu and YangChow Fried Rice

Taste = 4.5/5

–          I have eaten at this place several times already but I don’t remember the food to have tasted this good. The Crispy Squid was cooked very well. The squid was on the spicy side and the meat was soft and not tough and chewy. The Halaan was just ok but the clams tasted fresh. The YangChow tasted above average. The Lapu-lapu was very fresh and the meat was very good. The sauce had a hint of sesame oil and really went well with the very fresh fish meat. The highlight of the dinner was the Suahe. The sizes of the shrimps were large and they were very fresh. The meat was soft but not mushy and the sauce in the heads tasted very good. The sour-salty sauce was just perfect.

Service = 5/5

–          The servers were very professional and it seemed that they have been doing their tasks since childhood. The dishes were served in good time and service was fast.

Ambience = 4/5

–          The restaurant looked clean and well-maintained but the other restaurants in its class have already made vast improvements.

Value for money = 4.5/5

–          The prices of the dishes were very reasonable. The dishes tasted very good and the freshness exceeded our expectations.

Seafood By the Bay (Block 1 Lot 5 Waterfront Road, Moon Bay Marina, Subic Bay Freeport Zone)

Seafood By the BayDate visited: May 2013

What we ate:

Sinigang na Maya-Maya, Mixed Vegetables, Fried Shrimps with Chili Sauce, Ensaladang Mangga, Ensaladang Seaweed and Fried Crab with Salt and Pepper

Taste = 4.5/5

–          The restaurant style is similar to that of a dampa, where almost all of the ingredients are alive just before cooking. The shrimp dish was very tasty and tasted very fresh, the sinigang soup was very sour (just how I like it) and the two ensaladas were refreshing. The crab tasted sweet and the meat was very fresh but the whole dish was a bit bland. Pairing it with vinegar brought out the best in the crab … yummy!

Service = 3.5/5

–          There were moments when the servers had to be reminded several times for our orders. The dishes were also served with long intervals in between. The ensaladas weren’t even served at the same time.

Ambience = 4.5/5

–          The temperature around the area was very hot. It was great that the restaurant had multiple air conditioning units and electric fans in the indoor dining area. The place had a welcoming feel and the table spacing was also good. There is a great view of the bay even from the indoor dining area.

Value for money = 3.5/5

–          The price was almost twice that of the dampa restaurants in the Macapagal blvd area with similar food quality. I guess that’s the premium you have to pay to get good seafood in the Subic Bay area.

Shylin Restaurant Seafood Palutuan (Bldg 1 Seaside Market, Macapagal Ave., Pasay City)

ShylinDate visited: March 2013

What we ordered:

Ensaladang Mangga, Steamed Brocolli, Crabs with Oyster Sauce, Crabs with Buttered Garlic Sauce, Chili Garlic Shrimp, Steamed Lapu Lapu Chinese style and Halaan

Taste = 5/5

–          Palutuan-type restaurants have the advantage of using the freshest ingredients, usually seafood, and Shylin had good cooks that did justice to the seafood. The crabs were very silky and sweet, Lyn liked them very much. The garlic butter sauce was sinful. I felt like I had a delicious glove made of butter after eating the crabs – that’s how much butter there was in the sauce. The shrimps were larger than what we expected. They were succulent and the sauce in the heads tasted very fresh. I like ginger very much and the taste of the halaan was very refreshing. Lyn liked the ensaladang mangga, it was sour, sweet and salty but more on the sweet side. The meat of the lapu-lapu was very soft and there was no fishy taste at all. The hint of sesame oil in the sauce made it more special. Fresh seafood cooked this well will always satisfy anyone.

Service = 4/5

–          There were a lot of servers and were willing to serve us. On some occasions, we needed to call their attention to get service.

Ambience = 4/5

–          In the area, there are two Shylins. The branch we went to had an air-conditioned area and an al fresco area.  The tables and chairs were basic and the air-conditioned area was bright and clean.

Value for money = 5/5

–          The total price we paid was very reasonable. The quality of the food they served exceeded my expectations.
